Free Workshop for Business Owners

“Making Good Design Happen” with guest speaker, John Poros, Associate Professor at the School of Architecture at Mississippi State University and Director of the Carl Small Town Center.
Tupelo, Miss - As part of a series of free workshops hosted by the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association, “Making Good Design Happen” will be held at the Gumtree Museum of Art in Downtown on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 5pm.
Guest Speaker, Professor John Poros, who is an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at Mississippi State University and the Director of the Carl Small Town Center, will discuss small affordable changes that will make a big impact to the exterior of a building to make it more attractive, inviting, and aesthetically sound.
The Carl Small Town Center is a nationally recognized community design center with awards from the American Planning Association and the American Institute of Architects. Work of the Center has been shown at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. and as far as Berlin, Germany.
Professor Poros was the former director of the Educational Design Institute, a research center to improve school design. Before joining the faculty at Mississippi State thirteen years ago, Professor Poros worked with the internationally known architecture firm of Kieran Timberlake Associates in Philadelphia for seven years. He also taught as an adjunct professor at Philadelphia University. Professor Poros received his Masters of Architecture degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and his Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University.
“We are so excited and honored to have Professor Poros in Tupelo for this workshop” said Debbie Brangenberg, Executive Director of the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association. “Design is part of the Main Street Four-Point Approach® that is widely used throughout the United States as a unique economic development tool. We are excited to be able to share this information with all of Tupelo and the surrounding areas.”
The workshop is free and open to the public. From 5 – 5:30pm, everyone is encouraged to participate in a social time with beverages and light snacks provided, and the workshop will begin promptly at 5:30 and will last approximately one hour. All business and building owners, including non-Main Street members are encouraged to attend.
The series, titled “Keeping Up Appearances” includes one more workshop to be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at the Gumtree Museum of Art. During this workshop, “Storefronts That Sell”, Craig Helmuth, DTMSA Program Associate, will discuss and demonstrate how to create eyecatching window displays and the proper use of lighting.
